How to complete elective subjects?
See respective semester listings for current electives offerings!
A first choice for electives will be courses you are interested in, but do not need to fulfill requirements from obligatory modules. In particular courses offered in module >856M13 – Methods in Geoinformatics are very well suited to develop additional competences adding to your profile.
MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses):
Several of these increasingly popular online courses now can be taken for electives credit as well. They can be found in the PLUSonline course catalog when searching for ‘MOOC’. These courses are run on a fixed schedule, and do not always align well with semester periods.
ESRI Virtual Campus:
This is online software training, for credit you can choose from classes listed in PLUSonline. Search in http://online.uni-salzburg.at for classes containing ‘ESRI VC’ in the current semester, like:
In each class, one or several ESRI VC courses are listed, which you need to complete in order to receive the 1 ECTS credit offered for all online classes based on the ESRI Virtual Campus > Example (be aware that course numbers with a leading ‘U’ cannot be selected!)
The online course units required for electives credit can be done at any time, there are no deadlines or specific requirements. When you have completed the VC courses required for course credit, save the ESRI VC course certificates issued upon completing tests / exams as pdf files, register for the class in PLUSonline and send pdf certificates to email@example.com Class credits will then be entered to show up on your transcript.
New to ESRI Virtual Campus?? Go to http://training.esri.com and sign in with your ESRI account. Public Esri accounts do NOT provide course access – this has to be an account validated with the University of Salzburg license: as an MSc Applied Geoinformatics student, use your ‘MAGI*’ account! For any other University of Salzburg student: please request an invitation from firstname.lastname@example.org via your University of Salzburg email address, like @stud.sbg.ac.at. You will receive an Email invite to set up your Esri account for access to the Virtual Campus. It is strongly recommended to prefix your chosen user name with ‘PLUS_’, eg ‘PLUS_first.lastname’.
The above is applicable as well when you are requested or recommended to complete a Virtual Campus unit as part of any coursework at PLUS!
Of course software skills other than ESRI are highly recommended, to be acquired either through informal means or other online options!
For everybody not having completed their bachelor’s degree in Geography at Salzburg, in particular when there was no opportunity to take equivalent undergraduate courses, the following classes are recommended and can be accepted for electives credit within the AGI MSc:
- Topographische Kartographie und Luftbild (VO+UE)
- Thematische Kartographie (VO+UE)
- Grundlagen der Geoinformatik (VO+UE) (English language)
- Remote Sensing and Image Processing (VO+UE) (English language!)
As a partner in the ERASMUS+ GeoServices-4-Sustainability project, a set of online learning modules is available for electives credit. These modules have to be taken through a project partner (like University of Olomouc) with credit transferred after successfully completing the module. All learning media and resources are openly accessible via guest access.
